My name is Joe Correnti and I have been teaching in the Lynn Public Schools for the past 17 years. I spent the first 14 years teaching within the special education field and the last 3 in Physical Education. My philosophy as a gym teacher is for the students of Breed to understand the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle consists of three important categories; what we put into our bodies, the importance and variations of exercise as well as social interaction. I design my gym classes around these three important philosophies.

Every activity that we do always revolves around one important rule: cooperative play. It doesn’t matter what a student’s athletic ability ever is, it’s how the students work together to support each other and make their team or group successful.

I use a lot of project adventure based activities, where students need to problem solve as a group in order to accomplish one goal. At the end of each period the class will take a few minutes to debrief and discuss what strategies were successful and which ones were pitfalls. I know that each day was a success, if ever student leaves the gym with a smile, positive outlook on life and some sort of cardio activity for the day.

My name is Katelyn Leonard and this is my first year teaching both Physical Education and Health in the Lynn Public Schools. Both my Phys. Ed. and Health classrooms revolve around providing students with a basic tools to lead a healthy life.

Health class encourages the development of physical, social and emotional health to promote overall wellness. The emphasis in this class is to develop personal health goals as well as a general understanding of the skills needed to live a healthy and happy life. We will discuss topics such as: Decision-Making, Personal Hygiene, Nutrition & Fitness, Self-Esteem, Tobacco, Alcohol and other Drugs and The Body Systems.

My Physical Education classroom will focus on three areas: cooperative learning, personal fitness and development of new skills. Since each student comes to class with varying fitness abilities, the emphasis is on personal growth with individual skills and, more importantly, collaboration with fellow classmates to achieve a common goal. My goal for students is to not only find an aspect of physical fitness that they enjoy and can explore further when they leave the classroom, but also to learn how to work with and encourage their peers.

In both classrooms, students are encouraged to keep an open mind, think creatively and try new adventures.

My name is Donna Rivers.  I am a Registered Nurse and have been teaching for over 30 years, 19 of which have been at Breed Middle School. I am passionate about combining my nursing and educator skills to help provide a foundation of good health for the students of Breed Middle School.  This foundation will serve our students healthy decision-making process for a lifetime.

The Health Class structure is an interactive environment in which I use many proven methods to reinforce the curriculum to keep the students engaged and attentive.

I employ many activities from hands-on exercises to real-life examples and situational awareness to which the students are able to quickly relate.  Promoting a format for open communication provides an optimal environment for the health related topics we discuss.
