I’d like to share highlights from our recent Lynn City Swim Championships held at the Peter Sawin Natatorium. The 53rd annual Lynn City Swim Championship Meet, featuring the three Lynn public high schools, ended with a thrilling victory by Lynn Classical. The score was close throughout the meet with Lynn Classical and Lynn Tech swapping the lead and Lynn English keeping close behind. But going into the final event, the 400-freestyle relay, Lynn Classical and Lynn Tech were separated by only 2 points. Each team needed a first-place finish in the relay to secure the win.
Lynn Tech broke out an early lead and widened it with their first two swimmers, while Lynn Classical's Andrew Moore and Aleana Benedetto battled to cut the lead. By the third leg of the race Sydney Finnigan began to close the gap as she gained on Tech’s swimmer. When Classical’s fourth swimmer, sophomore Camille Mendonca hit the water she was almost a full lap behind Lynn Tech’s final swimmer, and it appeared that Lynn Tech would have no problem taking first. But on every stroke Mendonca got a bit closer, her terrific turns decreased their lead too, until she caught up in the final few yards of her leg. The fans were cheering wildly, coaches and teammates were jumping up and down and you couldn’t hear anything above the noise.
When they reached the wall Mendonca of Lynn Classical had touched him out finishing three one hundredths of a second over Lynn Tech for first place, winning both the relay and securing the meet! She also swam a personal best time. Other winners for Lynn Classical were Daniel Puma who took first in both the 100 Breaststroke and the 50 Free. Camille Mendonca also had a first-place finish in the 100 Free with Sydney Finnigan and Aleana Benedetto going 1-2 in both the 200 and 500 freestyle respectively. Merdi Ifufa took first in the 100 Fly shaving 14 seconds off his personal best. The Diving competition was outstanding, with Lynn Classicals Ava Anderson finishing first with 187.7 points.

Today the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Board of Directors (BOD) met virtually to address the formal recommendations from the MIAA COVID-19 Task Force regarding Educational Athletics for the 2020-2021 school year. President Jeff Granatino acknowledged to the Board how, “a lot has happened since July 21 and as we come together today there is guidance from the state on modified sports seasons for school year 2020-21.” Granatino continued, “The recommendations before us may not meet everyone’s expectations, but they provide a real opportunity for our students to take part in high school athletics for the first time in months.”
The MIAA Task Force began meeting in late May with the charge from President Granatino to provide COVID-19 resources related to Educational Athletics for MIAA school leaders, research the impact of COVID-19 on the landscape of high school athletics, and provide recommendations to the MIAA BOD regarding Educational Athletics for the 2020-2021 school year. The Task Force consists of 24 members, representing MIAA principals, superintendents, athletic directors, school committees, medical personnel, game officials, coaches and MIAA staff. Additional stakeholders include the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA), Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and the MIAA Sports Medicine Committee who collaborated with and provided guidance to the Task Force.
This morning MIAA Task Force co-chairs, Dr. Keith Crowley, St. John’s Preparatory School Principal/Associate Head of School and Mr. Thomas Holdgate, Duxbury High School Athletic Director, presented 11 formal recommendations, including a modified athletic season structure, to the MIAA Board of Directors. An additional two motions were voted on after the formal Task Force presentation. View the Task Force formal recommendations and the additional motions.
All Task Force recommendations and additional motions were approved by the MIAA Boardof Directors.
MIAA Executive Director Bill Gaine stated, “On behalf of the MIAA Board of Directors, the Association can be proud of the outstanding contributions of its COVID-19 Task Force which came to fruition today with Board ratification. Today’s actions demonstrate the magnanimous service by our volunteer Principals, Athletic Directors, School Committee and Superintendents to provide Educational Athletic opportunities for MIAA student-athletes.”
There still remains work for the MIAA COVID-19 Task Force, including a review of sport-specific guidance and modifications submitted by the respective MIAA Sport Committee representatives and the Sports Medicine Committee. The Task Force plans to continue communications with EEA and DESE to prepare winter season recommendations for the MIAA Board meeting scheduled in October.

MIAA Unveils Guidance for High School Sports in 2020-21
(August 13, 2020)
The plan has football, high risk sports shift to 'floating season' between winter and spring
The MIAA and Mass Department of Elementary and Secondary Education released joint guidance on Tuesday laying out how high school sports should be structured amid the coronavirus pandemic for the 2020-21 school year.
The guidance now goes to the MIAA Board of Directors, which is expected to vote on the plan during its meeting Wednesday morning. Chief among the guidance's recommendations is the use of a condensed four-season setup that would create a floating season for high risk sports like football that can't be played at their usual time of year. The floating season would be held between the winter and spring season, most likely during March and April.
The guidance also indicates that low and moderate risk sports, including golf, cross country, soccer, field hockey, girls volleyball, gymnastics and fall swimming and diving, will be permitted to compete.
"At this time, based on current statewide health data, sports that the [Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs] guidance lists as lower and moderate risk may be held during their normal seasons, provided that MIAA's recommended modifications specific to those sports meet the standards outlined in the EEA guidance," the statement says. "For the fall season, higher risk sports, including football, cheer and unified basketball will be practice only, using the cohort method described in the EEA guidance."
Under the EEA guidance released last week, all sports will have to implement modifications to eliminate deliberate contact, minimize intermitent contact and encourage social distancing as much as is practical. The MIAA will develop sport-specific modifications to meet those requirements, which will be announced shortly before their respective seasons.
Football, other high risk sports being held later in the year like basketball and ice hockey, and any sport that cannot meet the EEA's minimum modification standards will have the opportunity to move to the floating season. The EEA will re-release its guidelines prior to the winter, floating and spring seasons, at which time final decisions regarding those sports will be made.
The guidance also details how school districts using remote learning should handle high school sports.
Districts designated as "red" in the Department of Public Health's metric of average daily cases per 100,000 residents will be required to postpone their fall seasons, including practices, until the floating season. As of Tuesday night there were 11 such communities, including Chelsea, Everett, Granby, Holyoke, Hull, Lawrence, Lynn, Revere, Salem, Saugus and Wrentham.
Districts that are in communities designated as yellow, green or unshaded based on the DPH metric but which decide to use remote-only learning anyway may still participate in fall sports, as long as the local school committee gives its approval.
The guidance indicates that a rise in cases locally may necessitate postponements or cancelations, though exactly how that will work is still undecided.
"The MIAA will develop a timeline for looking at data prior to the start of each season to determine which color-coded designation a district should fall into for the purposes of engaging in sports," the guidance says. "For example, the MIAA could determine a school's color-coded designation/eligibility on Sept. 1 to determine initial eligibility and check again on Oct. 1 to determine of the school remains eligible to participate in the fall season."
July 2020 - Announcements and More RAMS In The News!
April 24, 2020
Spring Sports and Spring Tournaments cancelled for the remainder of 2019-2020 School Year
In accordance with Governor Charles Baker’s announcement Tuesday that Massachusetts schools will be closed to in person learning for the remainder of the school year, the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) regretfully has cancelled all spring sports and spring tournaments.
Today’s decision by the MIAA Board of Directors was difficult, disappointing, and one that was deferred for several weeks as Association staff, Association members from the Tournament Management Committee (TMC) and the Board worked aggressively to construct optional structures to save the opportunity for our MIAA 80,000 student-athletes to enjoy a spring season.
Despite this disheartening but unavoidable action, it is paramount to applaud our constituents, principals, athletic directors, coaches and student-athletes for their positive power of example and cooperation during this unprecedented crisis.
The “life lessons” inherent in the games we play will be our resiliency to provide mental and physical strength to focus on the discipline and teamwork to make a difference in the challenging chapters in the Game of Life. #OneTeamOneMIAA

MASS HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY TO BE NAMED AFTER AGGANIS
The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) today announced a partnership with the Agganis Family to honor the “Legend” Harry Agganis. With great respect, the MIAA and the Agganis Family announce the creation of the “Agganis Trophy” to be awarded at each of the eight MIAA Championship games at Gillette Stadium in December. “On behalf of the Agganis family, it is such a great honor to have Harry Agganis’ name associated with the MIAA Superbowl Trophy” stated Greg Agganis, Harry’s great nephew and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Agganis Foundation.
A native of Lynn, Massachusetts, Aristotle George “Harry” Agganis was born into a large family. Agganis excelled at Lynn Classical High School in both football and baseball as well as achieving high academic status. His efforts resulted in numerous athletic scholarships offered to him post-graduation. A local at heart, and wanting to stay close to his mother, Harry brought his talents to the Terriers of Boston University as a collegiate football, basketball and baseball player. Agganis’ football talents earned him All-American honors, the first for a Boston University Terrier.
Agganis had a year of military service in the Marine Corps in the middle of his college career. He received a dependency discharge from the Marines to support his mother and returned to collegiate athletics. Following graduation, Agganis pursued his passion for baseball by signing a professional contract with the Boston Red Sox. After playing two years of professional ball, Agganis became gravely ill and died suddenly of a pulmonary embolism in June, 1955.
An unfortunate tragedy, Agganis’ death was mourned and honored by thousands. His legacy was quick to develop and endure. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1974 and had many attractions named in his recognition including a street in Boston, a multipurpose sports facility at Boston University and a stadium in North Carolina. “Harry is still considered one of the best high school athletes ever to play in Massachusetts,” Greg Agganis said. “He was the first athlete inducted into the inaugural MIAA Legends Event in 2016. This honor continues his great legacy along with the naming of the Agganis Arena at Boston University and the Agganis Foundation which has given out over 2 million dollars in scholarships since its inception in 1955.”
MIAA Executive Director Bill Gaine supported this testament, “On the evening of June 16, 2016 at Gillette Stadium, Harry Agganis, posthumously received universal acclamation as the premier honoree at the MIAA’s first Legend’s Ceremony. It is now fitting that the legacy of Harry Agganis, a MIAA student-athlete, alum and “legend” be solidified and enshrined with the creation of the Agganis trophy as the highest accomplishment of excellence.”
Dick Johnson, Curator of the Sports Museum of New England remarked, “Not only was Harry Agganis honored with an award as the best high school athlete in America in 1947, his leadership, as displayed when he urged his Lynn Classical football teammates to stand by their African-American teammates while turning down the chance to defend the Shrine Classic title at the Orange Bowl, was an essential part of his character.”
Harry Agganis’ character, talent, loyalty and dedication is in direct alignment with the mission of the MIAA which promotes interscholastic athletics that provide lifelong and life-quality learning experiences to students. MIAA approaches this new partnership with reverence for the legacy of Harry Agganis.

My name is Mike Zukowski and this will be my 10th year as the Varsity Baseball Coach at LCHS. My goal as the head coach was and is to build a successful baseball program. Every player that has come through the baseball program knows the importance of the label “student-athlete”. I stress the fact that these players are “students” first and “athletes” second. I’m a firm believer that your performance on the field is a direct reflection of your performance in the classroom. With that said, I’m proud to say that these young men not only leave the program as better ball players, but they leave us as better individuals.
I’m a graduate of Lynn Classical High School (1996) where I was a proud member of the National Honor Society and lettered in football, basketball, and baseball.
