Bonjour!  I am Mlle. Gilbert and I am the French teacher here at TMMS.  My goal is to help students open their minds to learning something new, stay organized, and be able to work well with their peers.  It is also important to me that my students have a strong foundation that will enable them to be successful in French 2 when they enter high school.  I have a bachelors in French language and English literature, and a Masters in Foreign Language Education.  I am also a Cross Country and Track coach at TMMS.  This is my 5th year at TMMS.

In my off time I enjoy running, reading, and spending time with my family.

Hola - My name is Carleen French. I am part of the team of the Foreign Language department at the Thurgood Marshall Middle School, teaching Spanish to heritage and native speakers in grades 6, 7, and 8. I have been a teacher for four years, certified to teach Spanish and Math.  I was born in Honduras and I have been living in United States for more than 10 years, and my family lives in Lynn.

As someone who has had to learn English to a professional level to be a teacher, I understand the ups and downs that come with acquiring a second language. My goal is to use high standards and individualized student attention to prepare my students for high school and beyond, focused on reaching a practical level of bilingual language skill. I am looking forward to walking with each student on the path to success that awaits them. Gracias!

Ms. Nunez has been teaching a TMMS for 21 years, she began as a Math teacher and has been a Spanish teacher for the last 5 years. Ms. Nunez is originally from The Dominican Republic.  She graduated from Univesidad Dominicana Organización y Método in The Dominican Republic with a degree in Business Administration.  Ms. Nunez also received a Master’s degree in Education from Salem State University.
Beside teaching Ms. Nunez enjoys spending time with her family and traveling.

The foreign language program at TMMS is a 3 year program.  It is a great program that introduces Spanish to new students and helps to build strong reading and writing skills for those students who may speak Spanish but need help in reviewing the foundations of spelling, conjugating, and reading.  Every day they spend time practicing the four skills necessary for learning a foreign language: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Our goal is to prepare students for Spanish 2 which they will take their freshman year at high school. In 6th grade students are placed into Spanish or French for a semester (2 marking periods) and then make a decision to continue with Spanish or French in 7th grade, we call this 1A.  Students will then continue with Spanish 1B or French 1B in their 8th grade year.  Spanish 1A and Spanish 1B is a 1 year course split over 2 years.

Books Used:
Como te Va A & B, Bienvenidos, Dime, Asi Escribimos and Spanish is Fun

Students need to come to class with a notebook and a pencil.

Grading
:
Classwork=50%
Tests/Quizzes=20%
Projects=20%
Participation=10%

Students are expected to participate, ask and answer questions, respect and considerate to others.

Subject material covered:
6th Grade Exploratory:
Spanish speaking countries and culture, geography, Spanish alphabet, greetings, numbers, colors, the calendar, vocabulary for school, the family & house, adjectives and agreement of adjectives, making words plural, singular forms of ser, definite and indefinite articles, and other basic Spanish language grammar.

7th Grade Spanish 1A:
This is a continuation from 6th grade exploratory, students do not need 6th grade Spanish for 1A but it is helpful.  We cover a review of 6th grade, more in depth Spanish grammar, asking and answering questions, singular and plural, forms of ser & tener, regular and irregular ver conjugations for AR, ER, IR verbs.
Vocabulary includes:  school & classroom, family & home, food, clothing and shopping and sports.  Also Hispanic culture, customs and food are incorporated into class.  We end the year with a “tortilla party” and students are able to try many Hispanic foods using the “tortilla”.

8th Grade Spanish 1B
This is a continuation from 7th grade Spanish 1A and students must complete 1A with a B average to move on.  We cover: more in depth grammar, differences of ser & estar, more regular and irregular verb conjugations, the present progressive, conjugations of stem changing verbs, direct and indirect object pronouns, saber &  conocer and the use of the preterite (past tense) for regular AR, ER & IR verbs and reflexive verbs.  This year students will also read 3 small chapter books entirely in Spanish.  Each book has vocabulary and grammar that is language appropriate for the students.  Vocabulary covered this year includes: going to the doctor, travel, the airport, hobbies and past times, activities related to summer and winter and camping.

Mrs. Ross has been teaching Spanish at TMMS for 19 years.  She attended the University of Rhode Island for her undergraduate work in Education, English, and Spanish.  While at URI she studied for a year at La Universidad de Granada in Granada, Spain and spent a summer at La Universidad de Salamanca, in Salamanca, Spain.  She completed her Master’s Degree in Education from Simmons College in Boston.  Mrs. Ross has traveled to Puerto Rico, Mexico, Costa Rica and most recently The Dominican Republic where she and coworker Ms. Sara Nunez volunteered at an orphanage for a week in July.

Spanish at TMMS is a 3 year program.  Our goal is to prepare students for Spanish 2 which they will take their freshman year at high school. Students “try out” a foreign language (Spanish or French) for a semester in 6th grade and then make a decision to continue with Spanish or French in 7th grade, we call this 1A.  Students will then continue with Spanish 1B or French 1B in their 8th grade year.  Spanish 1A and Spanish 1B is a 1 year course split over 2 years.  There is no movement into an 8th grade foreign language class if students did not take 1A in 7th grade or earn at least a B- in 1A since students need the skills taught in level 1A to be successful. Mrs. Ross teaches Spanish as a foreign language to students who have no knowledge or very little knowledge of the Spanish language.  Books used:  Como te Va A & B,  Bienvenidos, Dime, Asi Escribimos and Spanish is Fun

STUDENTS NEED:
  • A 2 inch 3 ring binder with a plastic cover and a writing utensil.   Papers will be passed out, hole punched and will stay in these binders.  Students will be able to store their binders in class and can remove papers to study and complete work at home when needed.
