As a 5th year TMMS employee, I look forward to teaching 8th grade science in cluster 5 this year.  I spent a year in the school as a full time substitute teacher for all classes, and in 2012 an opportunity presented itself to lead a science class. After teaching two years of 7th grade science, this will be my first year teaching at the 8th grade level.  We have a great science team as always, and I am happy to be a part of it.

My name is Diana Lima and I have been teaching for more than 20 years, at the middle school, and high school levels. I lived in Azores – Portugal for several years, therefore I speak fluent Portuguese. I have a teaching degree in mathematics and I am completing a masters in middle school mathematics at Salem State University. I enjoy reading, exercising, listening to music and embroidery. I truly enjoy teaching at Thurgood Marshall Middle School, helping all students understand the different ways you can solve math problems and making math fun and useful.

Hello! My name is Jill Magner and I am the 8th grade ELA teacher in Cluster 5. I taught reading at Breed Middle School for three years and am super excited to be back at TMMS for my second year teaching English! I love that I have the opportunity to teach and learn with middle school students and families this year, and to share with them the excitement and discovery of learning.

I am a lifelong Salem resident who is married with 5 children; I also have a beagle named Junior. I have been teaching in Lynn for 15 years. I started at the Ford Annex and relocated to TMMS after the Annex closed, where I have remained ever since. I have 3 degrees from Salem University: A Bachelor’s in History; A Bachelor’s in Elementary Education; and a Master’s in Elementary Education. I plan to return to Salem University in the near future in order to obtain a second Master’s, this time in History.

I am also an author who writes a zombie series called: Zalem, Mass. I use my books to encourage my students to follow their dreams and do whatever it is that makes them happy. In this regard they are able learn about the entire writing process, what publishing a book entails, and it is so much fun to share this experience with not only my students, but also their families when they come to my book signings. Another great perk is that they get an advance look  at some of the amazing artwork completed by a variety of famous artists who work for both Marvel & DC comics. Students are fascinated by so many well-known professionals who help to bring my story to life, such as Marvel’s Thor Mangila and Star Wars artist Chris Wahl. They also love that Louise Simonson wrote a soundbite for the back cover of Book 1; Louise is the writer of The Death of Superman. She created Doomsday and was responsible for killing off the Man of Steel. Due to my affiliation with these artists, I was able to get one of my students published in Book 2. Yen-Nhi Chit was one of my students last year (2014-15), who I discovered was an amazing artist, so I paired her up with a colorist from Marvel Comics named Martin Teña and now she is not only a published artist, but she has also made her first serous contact in the art field.

In addition to teaching and writing, I have also coached both baseball and softball for the past 18 years, and am currently the softball coach here at TMMS. My biggest coaching success came in 2009 when I took my 15-year old AAU team, called the Hornets, to the Nationals down in Viera, Florida where we finished 3rd in the country and brought home a couple of trophies and the bronze medal.
