Dear Aborn Parents/Guardians,

This calendar represents the MCAS 2.0 Administration calendar for April and May 2018.

It is important that your child be present and well-rested on the day of testing!
ALL students in Grades 3-5 will be taking their tests on the computer this year. Students have already been practicing their keyboarding skills! They have also been practicing using the tools that are contained within the test itself (e.g., highlighters, rulers, drag and drop features etc.). At the bottom of this page you will see a chart listing the recommended testing times for each session in each content area. The pages that follow give you the day by day schedule. Testing begins promptly at 9:00 a.m. based on the recommendation of the Dept. of Education. I will also be meeting with students to make sure they are aware of the following security expectations. You should discuss these with your child next week (closer to the testing date).

Test results may be invalidated if students do any of the following activities during a test session (including after turning in their test materials, closing their computer-based test, during a break, or during the transition to a test-completion area):

  • Accessing cell phones or any other electronic device capable of taking photographs
  • Communicating with other students via talking, whispering, or writing notes
  • Looking at any other student’s computer screen
  • Consulting notes, books, or the internet during testing
  • Working in a test session other than the one being administered
  • Discussing the contents of the test or my responses to questions with anyone.

Dear Aborn Parents/Guardians,

As we stated in our previous letter dated June 1st, the Lynn Public School District is moving forward with a uniform clothing pilot program. During the 2017-2018 school year, the Aborn School will be participating in that pilot program along with the Callahan School. We will still continue to have Spirit Day each Friday, and one other non-uniform day each month centered on a fun theme (e.g., crazy hat day, sports team day etc.).

As a reminder, the uniform components include the following:
School Dress Code Items

  • 2 Navy Blue dry-fit Polo Shirts with school logo- one long sleeve and one short sleeve

These shirts are 100% polyester, sweat resistant, and light-weight.

  • 2 Khaki dress pants (blue or tan) worn with a black or brown belt. (Belts must look professional and fit through the belt loops. Belts are optional for K and Grade 1 students. Pants may not be cargo-style pants.)
  • Black or brown dress shoes or sneakers. (Sneakers must be worn to gym but can also be worn every day.)

Champions Choice of Wilmington will be the vendor for our uniform shirts. They will be delivering the shirts directly to our school in August. The Lynn Public Schools, through the efforts of Mr. Tom Iarrabino, has secured a grant to purchase one long-sleeved shirt for all students. This means that the long-sleeved shirt, which would normally cost $18.50 is being provided free of charge.

Each student will only need to pay $13 to purchase one short-sleeve shirt which will be delivered to the school the week before school opens. You may pick up the shirts on either August 29th, 30th or 31st. We will be looking for volunteers to help us with the distribution so if you know you would be able to help, please click here to email Leah Whitcom.

The payment for the shirt ($13) will be made at the time of delivery. We are asking that all parents pay with a check or money order for $13 made out to the Aborn PTO. Please put the NAME of your child on the memo line for easy tracking.

Pants and belts can be purchased at any local retail stores such as WalMart, K-Mart, and Sears.

Please note: Extra and/or optional items cannot be ordered for this first round of ordering. However, once the year gets underway, we will have a website that all parents can access for additional items. The website will have optional items (sweatshirts, t-shirts, skorts, shorts, jackets etc.) as well as required items available.

Additional Information
1) Our students will be taking their state-wide MCAS assessments during the months of April and May. A detailed schedule will be distributed on March 14th.

2) Like it or not, technology is an integral part of our lives and our children’s lives. On the reverse side of this notice are some technology tips that you might find helpful as a parent. They will help you and your children use technology responsibly, wisely, and to your benefit.

3) Do you feel your children need to have a better understanding of money and how much money is involved in daily living? Have them keep a, “Family Spending Journal.” For two weeks, they should keep track of and record what they spend money on. You should do the same. Bills, clothing, snacks, lunch money, rent or mortgage, field trip fees should all be listed. At the end of two weeks, share the information listed in your journals. They may still ask you for money, but at least if you say no, they will have a better understanding of why. (Suggestion from: The Home School Connection)

At the Aborn elementary school we never forget the above fact. It is our job and our mission, to work closely with parents and other members of the community to create students who enjoy the process of learning, attain the 21st century skills they need to lead successful lives, and in that process, discover their talents and ultimately themselves.  

We do this within the context of standards-based instruction and assessment, as well as a mindful focus on developing a character that includes responsibility, good decision-making, and empathy for others. These are things that students will carry with them throughout their lives.

Our staff members value the following responsive approaches to teaching:

About School Councils

A school council is a representative, school building-based committee composed of the principal, parents, teachers, community members and, at the secondary level, students, required to be established by each school pursuant to Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 71, Section 59C.

It is important to note the School Council plays an advisory role in assisting the building principal to organize and implement a School Improvement Plan which not only addresses the areas in which the school intends to comply with the requirements of the Educational Reform Act, but also how the school intends to meet those system-wide goals and policies adopted by the school committee. Membership will consist of the principal, teachers, parents, students and community members.
