Vaping Information and Resources

Dear Parents & Guardians,

The letter below is to inform you of issues surrounding “vaping”/ “juuling.” (using e-cigarettes). Lynn English High School would like to share information about vaping with our parents and guardians. Vaping is a serious concern for teens across the country. There are misconceptions that it is a “healthy” alternative to smoking when in fact it carries its own risks.

Feel free to contact us with any questions.

Thank you for partnering with us on this important topic of public interest.
We will continue to work to educate our students in all aspects of adolescent development.

LEHS STUDENT RECEIVES TORCH SCHOLARSHIP!

Lynn English High School is proud to announce that senior Allen Gutierrez has been awarded the Northeastern University Torch Scholarship. Valued at almost $300,000,

Torch Scholars receive eight semesters of full scholarship aid, covering tuition, room and board, books and fees. Continuing Northeastern University’s century-old commitment to educational opportunity, the Torch Scholars Program is a bold and innovative initiative that provides students with the opportunity to explore their passions and expand their global horizons. The program’s nomination and holistic review process identifies bright students from across the country who have succeeded against the odds. Torch is dedicated to supporting these talented, first-generation college students through an extensive full-scholarship program that includes: a comprehensive summer immersion program, intensive academic planning and assessments, in-depth peer and professional mentoring, and a wide array of social events that foster group identity and camaraderie.

The program is simply unparalleled in its support for first-generation students from diverse backgrounds. Much more than a scholarship, Torch is a comprehensive model for access, retention, and achievement. Torch Scholars have a drive to succeed—for their families and for themselves—and exhibit a universal commitment to giving back, completing 100 hours of service each academic year. The scholars possess the ability and the will to succeed—Torch transforms them into leaders by empowering them to put those qualities into action.

Lynn English Principal Thomas Strangie would like to congratulate Allen, his family, and all the Lynn Public Schools teachers who educated and supported him throughout the years! Principal Strangie would also like to acknowledge Lauren Mezzetti, a dear colleague who suddenly passed away about a month ago. Allen was a Science Aide for Ms. Mezzetti, and she was a huge supporter of Allen throughout the Torch Scholarship application process. She would be so proud of Allen’s accomplishment.

April 22, 2020 Update!

Lynn English is proud to announce that senior Tallia Dudley has been selected as a Gates Scholar and member of The Gates Scholarship Class of 2020. As one of 300 Scholars chosen from a pool of over 36,500 applicants from across the nation, she now belongs to an elite group of young leaders—all of whom represent the very pinnacle of academic achievement, service, and commitment.

In addition to funding Tallia’s undergraduate education, The Gates Scholarship will help her continue to hone leadership skills, prepare for professional life, and start building an enduring network of fellow Scholars and other distinguished individuals. Tallia will also have access to a range of support services, including mentoring, leadership development, wellness, career guidance, internship and job opportunities, and more.

From Thursday, June 25, 2020 – Sunday, June 28, 2020, Tallia will attend The Gates Scholarship Summer Institute (TGSSI) at the Los Angeles Airport Marriott, Los Angeles, California. TGSSI will bring together the entire Class of 2020 for a four-day, all-expenses-paid conference that will initiate the networking, comradery, and sense of empowerment that will define Tallia’s experience as a Gates Scholar. Principal Thomas Strangie would like to congratulate Tallia, her family, and all the Lynn Public Schools teachers who educated and supported her throughout the years!

April 20, 2020 Update!

Tallia Nicole Dudley, a graduating senior at Lynn English High School, has been named one of 621 semifinalists in the 2020 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. The semifinalists were selected from nearly 5,600 candidates expected to graduate from U.S. high schools in 2020.

Inclusion in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, now in its 56th year, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors. Scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities.

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 by Executive Order of the President to recognize some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors for their accomplishments in  many areas: academic success, leadership, and service to school and community. It was expanded in 1979 to recognize students demonstrating exceptional scholarship and talent in the visual, creative, and performing arts. In 2015, the program was expanded once again to recognize students who demonstrate ability and accomplishment in career and technical fields. Annual, up to 161 U.S. Presidential Scholars are chosen from among that year’s senior class, representing excellence in education and the promise of greatness in America’s youth. All Scholars are invited to Washington, D.C. in June for the National Recognition Program, featuring various events and enrichment activities and culminating in the presentation of the Presidential Scholar Medallion during a White House-sponsored ceremony.

A distinguished panel of educators have reviewed these submissions and selected 621 semifinalists. The Commission on Presidential Scholars, a group of 32 eminent citizens appointed by the President, will select the finalists, and the U.S. Department of Education will announce the Scholars in May.

Welcome to Lynn English High School

July 17, 2020

Dear Lynn English Families,

It is my honor and privilege to serve as Acting Principal of Lynn English High School for the upcoming school year. As an alumna of LEHS, class of ’89, and a former LEHS Department Chair, I am happy to return to the school I love. Building personal relationships is at the core of my beliefs, and I look forward to teaming with staff, students, and families to bring collaboration, innovation, and inspiration to learning.

For decades Lynn English has reflected a culture of academic excellence and has been represented by a diverse community of self-directed, life-long learners. I plan to nurture that tradition as well as integrate the Lynn Public School’s mission of working together so our students learn to thrive, advance, and impact the greater community and the world. One of my first action steps will be to learn about the current needs of our school, so that I may make informed decisions about the direction for our growth. I would greatly appreciate your partnership by completing the family and community survey which will be shared with you in mid to late August through our Jupiter messaging system. Using this important data, I will work with staff and students to continue to move our school forward and to increase transparency among all stakeholders.

Some exciting new changes are afoot, and we are all learning to adapt. While last school year students learned to navigate their learning experience virtually, I am optimistic that we will be returning to our school building in some capacity this fall. The district is currently developing a plan for our start, keeping student and staff safety as a priority and providing a learning management system that will allow our students to use this online platform in their learning whether in school face to face or at home remotely.  I am committed to keeping you updated regarding the fall schedule. In order to be sure that you are getting the most accurate information from the school and district, it will be important to have your most accurate phone number and email in our system. Please contact me via email at mowera@lynnschools.org or by phone at 781-477-7366 if your information needs to be updated.

I ask you to please partner with us as we work to fulfill the intellectual, physical, and social-emotional potential of all our students. Our faculty and staff are committed to maintaining high expectations for learning in an environment of inclusivity and mutual respect.

Please keep informed of news and announcements on our school’s website and calendar.

With warmest regards,
Anastasia Mower

About School Councils
A school council is a representative, school building-based committee composed of the principal, parents, teachers, community members and, at the secondary level, students, required to be established by each school pursuant to Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 71, Section 59C.

It is important to note the School Council plays an advisory role in assisting the building principal to organize and implement a School Improvement Plan which not only addresses the areas in which the school intends to comply with the requirements of the Educational Reform Act, but also how the school intends to meet those system-wide goals and policies adopted by the school committee. Membership will consist of the principal, teachers, parents, students and community members.
