TMMS School Orchestra Performs Amazing Grace with excerpts from
Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" Speech

Martin Luther King
delivered his iconic I Have A Dream speech
on August 28th 1963 at a civil rights rally in Washington DC
officially known as the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. believed in a nation of freedom and justice for all, and encouraged all citizens to live up to the purpose and potential of America by applying the principles of nonviolence.

MLK Day of Service is a way to honor his life and teachings by engaging in community action that continues to solve social problems. Service breaks down barriers by bringing people from different experiences together – volunteering can unite Americans of all ages and backgrounds while building stronger communities.

FIVE WAYS TO SAFELY HELP YOUR COMMUNITY DURING COVID 19

  1. Make “caring cards” to take to a local senior center or fire house.
  2. Find your old t-shirt/towels and donate to an animal shelter.
  3. Stay in touch – check in on your neighbors, friends, or family. Especially those who are older or may be alone. A phone call, text, or conversation could brighten their day.
  4. Volunteer from home - Check out AllForGood.org for service ideas.
  5. Complete a random act of kindness - hold a door, pick up trash, tell someone you appreciate them.

i-Ready Family Webinars - January 21st and 26th
iReady Logo

Dear Parents and Guardians,
I am excited to share that our Thurgood Marshall Middle School is implementing a Mathematics and Reading program called i-Ready. Below, you will find information about the program and how we will be using it in the classroom.

What is i-Ready?
i-Ready is an online program that will help us determine your child’s strengths and areas for growth, personalize their learning, and monitor their progress throughout the school year. i-Ready allows us to meet your child where they are and provides us with data to inform instruction.

The i-Ready Diagnostic is an adaptive assessment that adjusts its questions to suit your child’s needs. Each item a student receives is based on their answer to the previous question. For example, a series of correct answers will result in slightly harder questions, while a series of incorrect answers will yield slightly easier ones. The purpose of this is not to give your child a score or grade but to determine how to best support their learning.

What can I do to help?

To help prepare your child for the i-Ready Diagnostic, encourage them to:

  • Get a good night’s sleep and eat a full breakfast the day of the assessment.
  • Try their best on each question and try not to rush.
  • Try not to worry about questions to which they do not know the answers—remind them that it is expected that they will only get about half of the questions correct.
  • Be respectful of other students who take longer to finish.
  • Use paper and pencil to show work for math questions.

What happens next?
The i-Ready Diagnostic will provide results that help me identify your child’s strengths and determine next steps for instruction. I look forward to sharing these results with you throughout the year and providing a learning experience that will engage your child while teaching important skills and concepts.

If you have any questions about i-Ready, please do not hesitate to contact me or the school. You can also learn more about i-Ready by visiting
i-ReadyCentral.com/FamilyCenter.

As always, thank you for your continued support and for being a partner in your child’s learning! It is much appreciated.

Sincerely,
TMMS Admin Team

What is i-Ready?
i-Ready is an online program for reading and/or mathematics that will help your student’s teacher(s) determine your student’s needs, personalize their learning, and monitor progress throughout the school year. i-Ready allows your teacher(s) to meet your student exactly where they are and provides data to increase your student’s learning gains. i-Ready consists of two parts: Diagnostic and Personalized Instruction. Because We Dreamed It

Dear Friends at Thurgood Marshall Middle School,

Whatever happens to us, we will be grow and become more whole. I am a friend of your principal, an author of children's books, and also someone who has lived with terminal cancer for ten years. If anyone has reason to hope, it is me. I want to pass this hope onto you.

I also want to hear your hope. I hope this brings you a smile and an extra dose of positive energy which you very much deserve. If you were going to add to this meditation, what would your affirmation be?

Welcome To The Thurgood Marshall Middle School Website

It is an honor and a privilege to serve as principal of a staff and student body committed to personal growth and academic achievement. Our primary goal is to ensure that every student is provided the highest quality of education possible in a safe and supportive learning environment.

Our mission at TMMS is to instill in our students the DREAM principles that guide our daily interactions through the development of dignity, respect, effort, achievement and motivation. We believe that by adhering to the basic ideas embedded in these five concepts, our students will become well-rounded and civic-minded individuals.

Through hard work and dedication, we can accomplish our dream of becoming a high performing middle school.
In our efforts to provide effective instructional practices and well-developed school structures that support student achievement we will be focusing on the following initiatives for the 2019/2020 school year:

• Teachers will engage in professional collaborative planning to improve instructional practices that will increase cognitive engagement for all students with the implementation of data informed instructional strategies. Focus areas include promoting higher order thinking skills and creating diverse learning opportunities for students to engage in rigorous learning tasks.

• All staff will implement an advisory curriculum that includes personal goal setting, commitment to social responsibility, and sustained silent reading. The goal of Advisory is two-fold: to build personal relationships where students start to learn their responsibility to self and the community and to increase the opportunity for pleasure reading by making connections to text in a fun, personal way. Advisories are a supportive, non-academic setting where students can connect learning with life.

• The Principal will implement a Principal’s Coffee once a quarter to invite community members to discuss school initiatives, offer feedback and share questions or concerns. School and family partnerships are central to improving academic achievement of our students. We encourage families to get involved in students' academic lives. Please join us in making this the very best experience for your children. Being informed will help.

Throughout the year our school website, school calendar, and newsletters will provide you with the most current information. We look forward to working together to ensure that all of our students meet their full potential.

Molly Cohen

About School Councils
A school council is a representative, school building-based committee composed of the principal, parents, teachers, community members and, at the secondary level, students, required to be established by each school pursuant to Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 71, Section 59C.

It is important to note the School Council plays an advisory role in assisting the building principal to organize and implement a School Improvement Plan which not only addresses the areas in which the school intends to comply with the requirements of the Educational Reform Act, but also how the school intends to meet those system-wide goals and policies adopted by the school committee. Membership will consist of the principal, teachers, parents, students and community members.
