Physical Education - MGL 71,3 requires that
physical education be taught in the public schools as a required subject in all grades
for all students. The goal of the LPS physical education program is to
-
teach skills, enable students to experience efficient movement in
individual, dual and team activities
-
foster social growth, citizenship and
sportsmanship
-
acquire knowledge and habits to assist them in maintaining a
healthy, active lifestyle.
Health Education
- Certified teachers provide
health education in grades K-12. This prevention program provides the opportunity for
all students to understand and practice concepts and skills related to
health promotion and disease prevention.
Health Services - Provides a broad scope of
services that address physical and mental health needs of our students and staff. Included
in the health services program are: health records, immunizations,
screenings, physical exams, medication administration, and first aid. In addition
the school nurses provide access to health insurance and referrals for
services.
Vision/Hearing Screening - To meet the
requirements of MGL, the LPS screens students for vision and hearing, notifies
parents of problems, provides referrals, and assists in finding eyewear
or hearing aids.
Dental Program - Students in selected grades
are provided prevention education and non-evasive dental screenings.
Students with dental problems are referred for insurance, emergency
care and follow-up.
Agencies - The LPS works with a number of
agencies that provide services to our students. Programs through this department include:
Project COPE - Provides a Student Assistance
Plan and Anger Management Programs
HAWC - Provides education
in areas of violence prevention. In Secondary schools programs are available about healthy
relationships and services to students in abusive relationships.
For the Elementary schools programs are available ib bullying
prevention and other social and emotional issues.
Catholic Charities - Provides a case manager (LICSW)
to assist pregnant and parenting students
Lynn Community Health Center - Provides school
based health centers at eight of our schools, mental health services, and
dental services.
U MA - Provides a nutrition education program
for elementary schools.
Family and Children's Services
- Provides
violence prevention clubs at two elementary schools.
YMCA - Day care provider
Gregg House - Day care provider
Camp Fire Girls and Boys - Day care provider
Girls Inc
- Day care provider and LYNC
programs
Solutions for Living - SCORE Program at three
high schools (conflict mediation)
NSCC - backpack safety program
