Health  Education Curriculum

 

Our health curriculum teaches students to take responsibility for their own health by learning how to stay healthy, practicing good health habits and giving up harmful ones, and responding to warning signs before something serious happens to their health.

Our curriculum is being taught in grades kindergarten  through grade twelve.  It is a sequential, age appropriate program that meets the guidelines of the Department of Education Health Frameworks, a part of Education Reform in Massachusetts.

This year your child will be covering the following topics in health:

Grade K

 

Safety and Prevention: This strand includes those aspects of health most often related to risky and dangerous behavior and conduct that can have negative life-long consequences on health.  The knowledge and skills present in this strand provide a means for young people to avoid risky behaviors, now and in the future, so they can lead healthier lives.

                        Topic

·        Disease Prevention and Control: Hand washing, Wellness VS Illness, Sneezes and Coughs, Body Care, Immunizations.

·        Tobacco Alcohol and other Substances Use/Abuse Prevention: What is a Drug, Drug Look Alikes, Poisons, What is Tobacco, Benefits of Avoiding Tobacco

·        Violence Prevention: What is Violence, The Influence of Television, Stopping Violence, The Asking Skill.

Social and Emotional Health: This strand includes those aspects of health that are particularly unique to human beings, namely being aware of ourselves, both as individuals and as members of social groups.  The knowledge and skills presented in this strand address and support our ability to interact with others in positive and socially acceptable ways.

                  Topics:

·        Interpersonal Relationships: More Fun With Everyone, I’m Special, I Am Special and So Are You, Positive Self-Image, Respect.

Physical Health: This strand includes those aspects of Health that are related to the natural progression of human development.  The emphasis is on building and maintaining healthy habits.

                        Topics:

·        Growth and Development:  The Heart

Nutrition: The students will be guided in Nutrition to gain the knowledge and skills to select foods that supports health and reduces the risk of illness and future chronic diseases.

Grade 1

·        Violence Prevention:  How Violence Hurts, The Influence of Others, Ask For It Skill, Stopping Violence.

·        Safety and Injury Prevention: Car Safety, Be Safe, Safe and Unsafe Places to Play.

Social and Emotional Health: This strand includes those aspects of health that are particularly unique to human beings, namely being aware of ourselves, both as individuals and as members of social groups.  The knowledge and skills presented in this strand address and support our ability to interact with others in positive and socially acceptable ways.

                Topics:

·        Interpersonal Relationships: I Have Feelings, Asking Skill.

Grade 2

                 Topics:

·        Disease Prevention and Control: Hand washing, Lice, Contagious Disease, Tooth Care.

·        Tobacco Alcohol and other Substances Use/Abuse Prevention: Messages in the Media, Messages from People, Self-Control Skill, My Incredible Machine, Over the Counter & Prescription Medicine.

·        Violence Prevention: What Makes Something Violent, The Effects of Violence, Messages We Get About Violence, Telling Others to Stop, Self Control Skill.

Social and Emotional Health: This strand includes those aspects of health that are particularly unique to human beings, namely being aware of ourselves, both as individuals and as members of social groups.  The knowledge and skills presented in this strand address and support our ability to interact with others in positive and socially acceptable ways.

                 Topics:

·        Mental Health: Identifying Feelings and Ways to Express them, Communicating Feelings, Role Models.

·        Interpersonal Relationships: How to be a good Listener, Friends.

Grade 3

            Topic

·        Tobacco Alcohol and other Substances Use/Abuse Prevention: Learning about Drugs (tobacco, alcohol, marijuana), A Drug That’s Not a Medicine, Real Friends Protect Us (peer influences), Be Smart-Don’t Start.

·        Violence Prevention: Keep Your Eyes Open to Violence, Understanding How Violence Hurts, Resisting Violent Messages, Learning to Calm Down, Ways to Stop Violence, Resisting Peer and Group Pressure

Social and Emotional Health: This strand includes those aspects of health that are particularly unique to human beings, namely being aware of ourselves, both as individuals and as members of social groups.  The knowledge and skills presented in this strand address and support our ability to interact with others in positive and socially acceptable ways.

                  Topics:

·        Interpersonal Relationships :  I’m  Unique (respect for diversity), Hazardous to My Health (decision making steps in problem solving), Responsibility as a Sign of Growing Up, Family Connections (how family members help each other), People We Admire (qualities of positive role models)

Physical Health: This strand includes those aspects of Health that are related to the natural progression of human development.  The emphasis is on building and maintaining healthy habits.

                        Topics:

·        Growth and Development:  Care of the Skin,   Physical and Emotional Development (how people change as they grow)

·        Nutrition: The students will be guided in Nutrition to gain the knowledge and skills to select foods that supports health and reduces the risk of illness and future chronic diseases.

 

Personal and Community Health: This strand includes those aspects of health most often related to our larger community and world.  The knowledge and skills presented in this strand lay the groundwork for participation in preserving and improving our surroundings and for dealing with future health related events.

            Topics:

Consumer Health and Resource Management: Safe in the Sun (sunscreen), Environment/Pollution, Environment and the Community, Ready to Recycle. TOP OF PAGE
