Welcome
Back To The 2022/2023 School Year At TMMS!
Before we
get into the framing of our year, we have
exciting news to share. Ms. Cohen has been
invited to be Interim Deputy
Superintendent for the upcoming school
year and Ms. Doucette has been placed as
Interim Principal in her place at TMMS.
The best news is that Ms. Cohen will
continue to be a vital part of our TMMS
Community and supporting us at the
district level.
We also would like to welcome aboard our
newly appointed Vice Principal, Timothy
Ferrari and newly appointed interim Vice
Principal, Alisa Fila. They will join our
veteran Vice Principal, John Pavia in
continuing our work from last year to
stabilize our school after the return from
remote learning. We are so proud of how
far we have come in this area and have a
strong team ready to set routines and
support our students in their middle
school years.
We are so excited to build our community
partnership through the lens of our DREAM
guiding principles, which guide our daily
interactions in dignity, respect, effort,
achievement, and motivation. This year we
will be working with our students around
the D.R.E.A.M. to elevate student voice
around our guiding principles. We believe
that these five concepts create a warm,
welcoming environment where we are
committed to being caring and civic-minded
individuals. Together we can build a
school community that includes everyone,
respects our differences, admires our
qualities, and celebrates our unique
talents. The school would like to continue
to explore how this relates to Social
Justice and our important Equity work.
School and family partnerships are central
to improving academic achievement of our
students. This year more than ever, we
aspire to work with families to support
our students' academic lives. We will do
our best to help keep families informed
and solicit feedback through surveys and
conferences. Throughout the year our
school website, school calendar, and
newsletters will provide you with the most
current information. This year we will
continue to incorporate fun, community
building events during Open House Evenings
and some Saturdays. We would love to see
you there!
Our academic priorities are delivering
effective instructional practices through
authentic relationships and social
emotional learning supports through an
equity lens. Here are our continued
commitments to you:
• We will engage in professional
collaborative planning to develop and
respond to formative assessments. We focus
on promoting higher order thinking skills
and creating diverse learning
opportunities for students to engage in
rigorous learning tasks.
• All staff
will implement an Advisory curriculum that
includes personal goal setting, commitment
to social responsibility, and social
emotional awareness. The goals for Advisory
are to build personal relationships and to
increase student agency by developing
personal goals. Advisories are a supportive,
non-academic setting where students can
connect learning with life.
• The Principal
will invite family members to the school for
listening and/or learning sessions to build
community, discuss school initiatives, offer
feedback and share questions or concerns.
Let me know if you have any ideas for this!
You can send me an email or call the school.
We look forward to working together to
ensure that all our students meet their full
potential and have a positive experience at
our awesome school.
Warmly,
Stephanie Doucette
Acting Principal

About
School Councils
A school council is a representative,
school building-based committee
composed of the principal, parents,
teachers, community members and, at
the secondary level, students,
required to be established by each
school pursuant to Massachusetts
General Laws Chapter 71, Section 59C.
It is important to note the School
Council plays an advisory role in
assisting the building principal to
organize and implement a School
Improvement Plan which not only
addresses the areas in which the
school intends to comply with the
requirements of the Educational Reform
Act, but also how the school intends
to meet those system-wide goals and
policies adopted by the school
committee. Membership will consist of
the principal, teachers, parents,
students and community members. |

GRADES 6, 7 and 8 - WELCOME TO THE 2022/2023 SCHOOL YEAR!
Greetings Families of Thurgood Marshall Middle School (TMMS):
We are so excited to welcome back our students and families to the new school year! Our goal is to ensure that every student receives the highest quality of education in a safe and supportive learning environment. Working together as a team with our staff and families, I am committed to helping each student achieve their very best.
To accomplish this goal, Thurgood Marshall Middle School follows The D.R.E.A.M. guiding principles. These are: Dignity, Respect, Effort, Achievement and Motivation. We will discuss and implement these concepts into everything we do at TMMS. Our focus will be to develop well-rounded and civic-minded individuals. This year we will elevate student voices and partner with families. When we model these concepts in everything that we do, we take our school from good to great.
We look forward to a busy, exciting, and rewarding year. Throughout the year our school website, calendar, and newsletters will provide you with the most current information.
Included here are Important Reminders & Procedures and the bus website, www.mbta.com. At this time we are not requesting student bring supplies. All they need is there LPS issued school computer and charger. Clusters will inform the students what supplies they need for school.
Best Wishes,
Stephanie Doucette
