As we enter flu season, the best way to protect your child, family, and school community is to get an annual flu vaccine.
Who should get a flu vaccine?
- Everyone 6 months of age and older should receive a flu vaccine each year.
- Flu vaccination is especially important for:
- Young children
- Older adults
- Pregnant individuals
- People with asthma, diabetes, heart disease, or other chronic health conditions
- Anyone who lives with or cares for those at higher risk
Why vaccinate your child?
- The flu vaccine is the best protection against influenza.
- Vaccination helps:
- Reduce the risk of getting sick
- Prevent severe illness and hospitalization
- Lower the chance of spreading flu to classmates, teachers, and family members
- Children under age 5, especially those under age 2, are at higher risk for serious flu complications.
Important facts
- The flu vaccine cannot cause flu illness.
- It takes about two weeks after vaccination for protection to develop.
- Even if someone gets the flu after vaccination, symptoms are often milder and complications may be less severe.
- Flu vaccines may reduce the risk of flu-related doctor visits, emergency visits, and hospitalizations.
Flu and COVID-19 vaccines
- Children and adults who are eligible can receive a flu vaccine and a COVID-19 vaccine during the same visit.
Where can families get vaccinated?
- Pediatrician or healthcare provider offices
- Local pharmacies (age requirements vary)
- Community vaccination clinics
- Vaccine locator websites such as on MA DPH website
